Title: Resilient Retrofit, Historic Structures Stand the Test of Time

Speaker: Illya Azaroff, AIA, AIA New York State Disaster Coordinator, Founding Co-chair Design for Risk and Reconstruction, Professor in Practice NYCCT CUNY

Program Description:  Over 80% of our buildings that stand today will be in use in 2050 and beyond. Our challenge as Architects is to adapt these buildings not only for new uses but to prepare them to be resilient to the shocks and stresses due to climate change. Historic structures in particular can be the key to rediscovering techniques of the past to address our future. Some of the DNA of good building practice lies in these buildings. On the other end of the spectrum historic structures are often the most vulnerable posing many difficulties in how we protect them, make them Climate ready and build in Resilience. In this session we will discuss challenges and opportunities with Historic structures and existing buildings in historic districts. Specifically areas of flood protection, wind and hurricane protection, as well as addressing temperature extremes will be covered. Following case a series of case studies audience discussion and resources will be shared.

1.0 AIA HSW/LU

Bio: Illya Azaroff, AIA, founding principal +LAB architect PLLC and Assoc. Professor, New York City College of Technology (CUNY), a leader in disaster mitigation, resilient planning strategies and design with more than 25 years experience. He consults with design teams across the US and the world. Currently, he is working with the city of Houston on Vision 2020, Puerto Rico, USVI, Kalinago first people of the Island of Dominica, Hau’ula community in Hawai’I and the City of Oakland Park Florida. He recently worked with FEMA/ANCR on developing community resilience benchmarks well as with the City of New York on the 2019 Hazard Mitigation Plan. Prior he served as a Technical Advisor to ASPR-Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response informing the NDFR-National Disaster Recovery Framework. His guidance is evident in NYC The Department of City Planning - Housing Retrofit Guidelines, FLASH - Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, Resilient Housing Guidelines and Enterprise Community Partners Multi-Family Resilient Strategies and can be found via TEDx, We are not Alone. He served as a subject mater expert with the Rockefeller Foundation 100 Resilient Cities and his studio recently completed a new All-hazard home in Breezy Point New York #Hurricanestrong, featured in the AIA National; film challenge. He is a recipient of several awards including the 2018 Delgaudio Award from AIA New York State and the AIA Young Architect Award ’14. Illya is a founding co-chair of the DfRR Design for Risk and Reconstruction committee, contributing to the 3rd edition of the AIA Disaster Assistance Handbook. He is an instructor with NDTPC-National Disaster Training Preparedness Center in Hawaii and is certified trainer for CalEMA post disaster assessment (SAP). Illya recently served on the AIA National Strategic Council 2016-2018.  Illya received a BA in Geography and a BSAS in Architecture from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a BArch and MArch from Pratt Institute, New York. Prior to coming to New York Illya worked in Berlin Germany and Milan Italy.
