PART 2: WORKSHOP

“Our life is our biggest design problem.”

Part 2 of the  RE|Define series 2023 features a workshop led by Jacki Schaefer, Rice University Career and Alumni Specialist, and Krystyn Haecker, AIA, Mirador Group. This engaging and interactive session will pick up on the conversation from the RE|Define panel and guide attendees through redefining and designing a career in the AEC industry. With a focus on highlighting different perspectives and identifying individual priorities, the workshop aims to empower professionals to consider paths to success in addition to the prescribed corporate ladder, designing their life and creating value on their own terms.

What can an equitable work structure and path to career fulfillment look like?

Speakers:

Jacki Schaefer is the Career and Alumni Specialist for Rice Architecture, with a foundation of experience and knowledge gained from her previous career as an architect and BIM educator. She is a passionate believer in the holistic application of architecture skills across industries and strives to equip architecture students and alumni with the tools they need to succeed in any field.

Jacki aims to create opportunities for professionals to identify a customized approach to work-life balance and a need to design a fulfilling career that also allows time for personal pursuits. This perspective has informed her approach to career counseling, where she encourages students and alumni to think beyond traditional career paths and explore opportunities that align with their unique interests and goals for long-term fulfillment.

Jacki has a combined 14 years of experience working at Rice, including six years as a Career Specialist. In this role, she has developed and implemented career-focused programs and events, provided one-on-one counseling and mentorship to students and alumni, and fostered relationships with a wide range of architecture firms, design studios, and other industry partners.
