Presented by Galveston Historical Foundation

Learn from national experts on traditional and innovative strategies for protecting buildings from flood damage through hands-on experience in some of Galveston’s threatened historic houses. Over two days, the symposium will visit multiple sites in Galveston to explore the ways in which different building strategies can help minimize flood vulnerability. The program will run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on both days, with an optional evening lecture and social on Thursday, June 16. Tickets covers admission and lunch for both days of the symposium as well as the Thursday evening lecture.

Through lectures and hands-on workshops, the symposium will cover the flood mitigation strategies of reinforcement, flood-proofing, structural elevation, and amphibious architecture and explore other flood-related issues affecting historic houses, including building codes and flood insurance reforms.
Approaching Water is organized through the Center for Coastal Heritage, a project of Galveston Historical Foundation. The Center for Coastal Heritage is a resource for practitioners working at the cross-section of the built environment and natural environment.  The CCH works in collaboration with a wide field of experts to examine cultural heritage within the context of our coastal geography. This project is in part funded by the Historic Preservation Education Foundation.
