NFPA 285 - Assembly Test of Exterior Walls with Combustible Components

Tuesday, November 19, 2013 –6:00 to 7:00PM  (5:30-6:00PM  Networking)

AIA Houston Architecture Center – 315 Capitol, Houston, TX, 77002

The NFPA fire test requirement for multi-story, non-combustible construction has been a part of the building code for over 20 years. Many Architects and code enforcement bodies are unaware of this requirement and/or there is a lack of consistent interpretation and enforcement. 2009 and earlier versions of IBC require testing of the “wall assembly” in Chapter 26 for exterior walls with combustible materials (foam insulation and air barriers). 2012 IBC requires NFPA 285 testing in Chapter 26 and Chapter 14. As the energy codes are advocating continuous wall insulation for adequate real world R-values the Architect will need to coordinate with the IBC fire testing requirements to ensure a code compliant design.

1 LU|HSW (pending)

2. The NFPA 285 assembly test on buildings in relation to the IBC.
3. Combustible wall components requiring NFPA 285 assembly testing.
4. Building envelope systems as part of NFPA 285 compliant assembly variations
