Houston: Uncommon Modern includes several activities that will seek to uncover, examineand honor under-valued modern architectural resources in the less explored areas of Houston.Houston Mod-led bus tours of Brookhollow Business Park on Saturday, October 10, 2015 will be thefirst public event associated with the project. The tour is also a part of Docomomo US’ Tour Day,an annual event that raises awareness of and appreciation for buildings, interiors and landscapes designed during the mid-20th century nationwide on the same day.

Located just north of the intersection of the 610 Loop and Highway 290, Brookhollow Business Park was the first non-industrial, commercial development planned north of Buffalo Bayou. The area features a significant collection of intact mid and low-rise commercial buildings constructed in late 1960s through early 1980s. The tour will showcase mid-century architectural techniques and materials as applied to a planned and deed restricted office park environment.

The Brookhollow Business Park tour will serve as a preview for a “Houston: Uncommon Modern” photo exhibit in partnership with AIA Houston to open at Architecture Center Houston in November 2015.The exhibit will explore mid-century commercial vernacular structures hidden in plain sight throughout the city. Featured sites include office parks, gas stations, strip malls, public park facilities, fire stations, post offices, banks, schools, and other overlooked, everyday markers of Houston’s environment. The goal of “Houston: Uncommon Modern” is to encourage a dialogue about the way we see and interact with our shared commercial, civic and institutional structures, and challenge our understanding of the modernist movement in Houston.
