The Urban Heat Island Effect has been recognized for years.  Now we have the ability to map it at a granular level to determine if parts of town are more vulnerable than others.  The Resilience Officer of the City of Houston undertook this study with Houston Advanced Research Center as its contract provider, and HARC will present how this project was implemented, the data captured, and give some recommendations for building strategies to cope with this environmental variation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand what the heat island effect is.
  2. Learn how the heat mapping campaign was developed and why.
  3. Understand the data analysis results.
  4. Understand how the mapping data will influence planning for buildings and neighborhoods.
