About this course:

Certified wood offers an excellent solution for building projects. When procured from responsibly managed forests, building with wood addresses climate change, conservation, and biodiversity, and provides renewable building materials with lower embodied carbon than traditional building materials. All this, and building with wood offers numerous human health and wellness benefits associated with biophilic design, indoor air quality and the intrinsic warmth of natural materials. This webinar covers the important role and value of certifications when building with wood.

Learning Objectives:

• Examine the connections between using forest products as a desirable, renewable resource, and protecting and expanding forests, through research, conservation, and strong community programs.
• Apply the Alternative Compliance Path MRac102 Legal Wood to achieve LEED credit for using legal, responsible, and certified-sourced forest products in projects.
• Discuss SFI standards as mechanisms for sustainable forest management, verified supply chains, and responsible procurement of forest fiber.
• Explore the need for science-based information to help consumers understand the conservation-related values of responsible forest management

About the speaker:

Jason Metnick is Senior Vice President, Customer Affairs for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). As Senior Vice President, Jason elevates the SFI Standards as a proof point for sustainable forestry and responsible purchasing. His work advances the mission of SFI through engaging and communicating the value of SFI’s standard to certified organizations, customers of SFI-certified organizations, and others interested in the value of sustainable forestry.

Jason has worked at SFI since 2001 and holds a Bachelor of Science in forestry from Northern Arizona University. He is a member of the Society of American Foresters and sits on a number of committees related to forest certification, chain of custody, and eco-labeling. He lives in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, two daughters, and Maple the wonder dog.

Per AIA National CE Standards, any learning program approved for AIA Learning Units may award CE credit for the approved program for up to (3) years from the date of approval so long as the CES Provider is in good standing. AIA Members may repeat the same course, but no additional credit will be granted or recorded.
