“Enhancing Human Health through the Power of Design: the intersection of public health and the built environment presents an extraordinary opportunity for architects.” - AIA Design & Health Summit

As architects serving healthcare clients, expanding our thinking beyond individual buildings to embrace a broader definition of healthcare is essential in the new paradigm of healthcare delivery.  This comprehensive perspective is not new but doing this with a focus on health and wellness (not sickness) will allow our clients to leverage a wider range of civic minded resources and positively impact populations not just individuals. The shift in thinking requires a fresh look at what it means to be a healthcare provider, a community partner and a systematic resource.  This planning happens within the framework of a master plan with a viewpoint beyond property lines and provides the foundation to influence community health and improve the lives of the people our clients serve.

To truly impact not just space, but human lives via space, we need new tools and approaches to design. In this presentation we will talk about data driven design, research-integrated design, evidence-based design, sustainable design and participative design, and argue that the common approach between all these buzz words comes from a common goal - not to just build buildings - but to build eco-systems that promote health.

“We want public health for all people, if you are an architect, you are a public health worker.” Acting Surgeon General Rear Admiral Boris Lushniak, M.D., M.P.H.
