Today, buildings need to be able to adapt, confronting a varied array of challenges including drastic environmental changes, increased density, and new environmentally friendly technologies, all while being sustainable and open to re-use and adaptation. Ideas of regeneration, resiliency, efficiency, sustainable planning, and green strategies must begin at the scale of the single building. Implementing these practices at a “micro” level sets the tone and influences the density, mobility, and connectivity design at the "macro" level of city blocks and streetscapes.

The Future of Buildings panel, Thursday, March 11 at 6pm, features architects Paulina Abella, AIA and Tayler Trojcak, AIA, and Ryan Slattery, Recovery Office, City of Houston, discussing the importance of buildings not being viewed as self-contained structures, but part of a complex network of relationships with natural, urban, and social systems.

Abella and Trojcak developed High Hackers, a proposal from Gensler that was one of three visionary projects featured in the Houston 2020 Visions exhibition. The project looks to transform Houston’s vertical fabric by repurposing vacant office space in high-rise structures. Ryan Slattery’s Resilient Codes & Setting Standards project calls for greater investment in building flood mitigation in order to keep future disaster costs down, save lives, and add new long-term jobs to the market.

The Future of Buildings panel is moderated by Jaime Sobrino, FAIA, Vice President Director of Operations, LEO A DALY, and Houston 2020 Visions Juror. Sobrino was recognized with the H. Samuel Kruse Silver Medal by the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Anthony L. Pullara Individual Honor Award by AIA Florida for his outstanding initiatives and support to AIA Puerto Rico & AIA U.S. Virgin Islands chapters in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria.
