Houston Energy Code Updates: What Designers Need to Know CE

BEC Houston is pleased to formally announce our first event of 2024. The event will take place on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the Architecture Center Houston from 3:30 pm to 5 pm.  The event will begin with a networking/social period with complimentary beer and wine, followed by an educational technical presentation on the new 2021 Energy Code adoption in Houston, TX. With the significant changes between the 2015 and 2021 International Energy Conservation Code, the BEC Houston Board wanted to host an educational technical presentation to highlight the key changes and impact to commercial building enclosure design. The presenter, Amrish Patel, with Simpson Gumpert & Heger, Inc. has over 16 years experience in building enclosure design, investigation and rehabilitation, and has been actively involved in BEC Houston for 5 years. He is a past Chair and current co-Chair for 2024. The presentation, “Houston Energy Code Updates: What Designers Need to Know” abstract and learning objectives include:

Abstract:
Energy performance requirements for commercial buildings are now more stringent across the United States than ever before. This presentation will provide an overview of the recent adoptions of energy codes applicable in the US, explore the methods of compliance, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method, with a focus on commercial building enclosure requirements. We will review recent updates in energy code requirements in Houston, TX, including envelope performance and design documentation updates. We will also review some of the fundamentals for building enclosure system design and the impact new energy code changes will have to common design strategies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review energy code requirements for new and existing building envelopes.
  2. Understand the major changes in the new building envelope energy code.
  3. Identify the mandatory performance requirements and design documentation for building enclosures.
  4. Recognize different energy code compliance paths for building envelopes and the requirements of each path.

Registration: $30 per person and will include a complimentary beverage and a one-year membership for BEC Houston. Membership will allow access to additional upcoming events in 2024.
