Houston’s First Baptist Church is in the process of transforming a former office building into “a place of light in the city” as their downtown campus. The Kirksey design team created a raw, yet sophisticated space with unique features that draw from the culture of the church.
Clearly visible from two busy highways downtown, the building presented a unique design opportunity to expand the church’s reach through inventive treatment of the existing façade and signage. The interior design includes a flexible worship space seating up to 600 people, classrooms to accommodate preschoolers through adults, and church administrative offices. A welcome center and coffee bar becomes the heart of the campus, with a concrete floor and exposed steel structure balanced by colorful furniture and OSB-clad millwork. HFBC’s long term vision is to create a co-working space on the third floor for like-minded ministries and non-profit groups.
