Presents BEHIND THE F.A.C.E. - Façade Analysis by Comparisons and Evaluations in the Urban Context

Featuring Mili Kyropoulou, LEED AP

Program Description

The objective of the present study is the investigation of the residential urban multi-storey building, with reference to the Greek “polykatoikias”, the most typical typology in the Greek urban environment. This course is focusing on the examination of the features and the potential of the façade element of the multi-storey buildings, as this is the physical boundary between the interior and the exterior conditions and for this typology is almost the only exposed surface of each unit. The comparative indicators of the assessment in this study are the daylight availability (illuminance) and the thermal performance (heating and cooling loads), which lead to a continuous attempt of establishing a balance between the two.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discern about environmental considerations in an urban context and the extent to which they affect the building envelope and ultimately the building’s performance.
  2. Explore the potential of using simulation software as tools of design evaluation in order to establish performance patterns and inform facades design.
  3. Explore synergies and conflicts of various design decisions that relate to Heat Loss Coefficient and Shading Factor.
  4. Associate different facades elements with their impact on thermal performance and daylight availability.
