ABOUT THE EVENT
The new Menil Drawing Institute (MDI) is dedicated entirely to the art of drawing, with distinct areas for study, exhibition, and conservation surrounding an open-air courtyard. Wide roof overhangs shade the building from the Houston heat while still allowing natural light into certain spaces through full-height custom curtain walls. The building also includes critical storage and conservation space below grade, requiring innovative waterproofing solutions to mitigate leakage and flood risks. SGH consulted on the building enclosure at MDI with involvement from schematic design through construction. This presentation will discuss the project’s building enclosure and highlight innovative design features employed by the project team for the below-grade waterproofing, custom glazing features, and exterior wall systems.

After attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

Understand the importance of collaboration between the architect and enclosure consultant early in the design phase.
Recognize potential design and construction challenges when using new, innovative, or custom systems and components.
Identify key waterproofing considerations when locating critical spaces below grade in Houston.
Understand new enclosure requirements resulting from recent updates to the Houston energy code.
