Join us on a tour of Houston Heights South to see the various additions and modifications, and learn how the historic preservation ordinance has impacted the built fabric. Founded in 1891, Houston Heights was Texas’ earliest planned community. The original development included deed restrictions that controlled setback, use, quality, and size of construction in the city. Once it was annexed by the City of Houston in 1918, the deed restrictions were no longer enforced and the properties began to change affecting the character of the neighborhood. The organization of The Houston Heights Association in 1973, the designation of the Houston Heights South as a historic District in 2011, and the adoption of the Houston Heights Historic Design Guidelines have all assisted in both revitalizing and preserving the historic character of the neighborhood. The walking tour will identify compatible modifications to the historic structures in the neighborhood and discuss how the historic preservation ordinance and design guidelines work together.
The tour will be led by Roman McAllen, AIA Assoc., Historic Preservation Officer, City of Houston
