BUILDING FOR ART AND CULTURE
Just as art and culture have always been necessary components of a civilized society, the buildings that house the objects and activities associated with these things also often aspire to elevate the human experience. Now, in an environment that is increasingly virtual, where attention spans have been drastically reduced, we ask the question: what is the role of buildings dedicated to arts and leisure today and into the future? This Record on the Road takes a look at cultural projects at a range of scales—from Schaum/Shieh’s Transart House to the forthcoming expansion of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (by Steven Holl Architects with Kendall/Heaton as architect of record)—and addresses the challenges and opportunities of designing for this building type in our rapidly changing world.

This event has been submitted for 2.25 AIA LU/HSW.

Speakers:

  • Larry Burns, FAIA, Principal, Kendall/Heaton Associates
  • Troy Schaum, Associate Professor, Rice School of Architecture; Partner, Schaum/Shieh
  • Moderator: Beth Broome, Managing Editor, Architectural Record
