Nonya Grenader, professor in the practice, Rice Architecture, and principal, Nonya Grenader Architects, presents the Noon Talk “Collaborations” at 12:00 p.m. via Zoom as part of the Rice Architecture Fall 2020 Lecture Series.
At a time when we are physically distanced, working together has never been more essential. In selected past projects (from professional, teaching and community-based designs), a spirit of collaboration has enlarged and enriched all experiences.
Nonya Grenader, FAIA, has taught design studios and seminars in the School of Architecture since 1994. She is a Professor in Practice and served as the Associate Director of the Rice Building Workshop (RBW) for twenty years. During that time, RBW students designed and built projects at various scales in the community, with a focus on affordable housing and engagement with Houston’s Third Ward. The Workshop received the NCARB Prize for the "Integration of Practice and Education" from the National Council of Registration Boards and the Collaborative Practice Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). RBW exhibited their Ze-Row House at the Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. in 2009, and Grenader (together with Danny Samuels) received an ACSA/AIA Housing Design Education Award.
Principal of her own small firm, Grenader's projects have a focus on residential and adaptive re-use and the work has been recognized with multiple awards and publications. In 2017, she received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from AIA Houston and in 2018, the Texas Society of Architects Award for “Outstanding Educational Contributions.” Professional and teaching endeavors have included numerous outreach projects and opportunities to collaborate with community partners.
Rice Architecture Fall 2020 Lectures are part of an initiative to acknowledge, understand, and act on systemic racism in the built environment. Invited designers, scholars, and activists will speak on the relationship between race, architecture, and, by extension, related questions of social equity, environmental justice, and gender parity. The aim of the lecture series is to foreground these issues in the school’s curriculum while more broadly fostering solidarity and action in architecture.
