The Rice Design Alliance has selected DUST, an architecture studio based in Tucson, AZ, founded by principals Cade Hayes and Jesús E. Robles, as the recipient of the Spotlight Award 2019. They will deliver the RDA Spotlight Lecture 2019 on Tuesday, February 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts Brown Auditorium.
The Spotlight Award considers architects from around the world within the first 15 years of their professional practice who have demonstrated design excellence and curiosity through their body of work.
Cade Manning Hayes was born and raised in Carlsbad, New Mexico. It was the experiences in the Lower Pecos River Valley of the Chihuahuan Desert that nourished his dreams, memories, and intimacy with the desert. As a son of a welder, his early influences come from the time spent helping his father and working on his grandfather's farm. Through these influences he learned to work with his hands, developing skills and a strong work ethic. It was this time spent that taught him enduring life lessons and to always strive for excellence in life's endeavors.
Upon receiving his Masters of Architecture from Texas Tech University in 2002, he moved to the Sonoran Desert where he worked with Rick Joy Architects until 2007.
Cade continues to seek and develop poetic pursuit and deep respect for the interdependence of place, experience, and materiality. There resides a strong will to refine knowledge, pursue dreams and apply both rigor and freedom to the ideas that govern the creation of anything new.
Jesús Edmundo Robles, Jr. is originally from the Southwestern, United States and spent much of his youth traveling to landscapes between Southern California and Texas. Jesus studied architecture at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas earning his Masters of Architecture in 2003. Upon departure, he cut a unique path to expand and hone his craft gaining over 15 years of architectural design, project management, construction, and construction management experience. He studied under various craftsman and architects, honing his sensibilities and skills as a finish carpenter, designer, and builder. This time spent would greatly influence and form his virtues towards the craft of architecture.
The works reveal an investigation into sustainable material development, articulation of craft throughout the design and build processes, and contributes to the discourse of phenomenology and place in architecture.
In addition to practice, Jesús is an instructor at the University of Arizona teaching design studios and Material Fabrication.
