Texas Accessibility Seminar: TAS and the ADA - The Finer Points

Presented by Teresa L. Darr, AIA and Douglas W. Darr

Lunch will be provided to all who RSVP.

The design and construction of buildings and facilities is a complex process involving input from many different parties including owners, architects and designers, engineers, and contractors.   Although most design professionals have a good general understanding of the application of the accessibility standards, there are still elements that are not compliant at the completion of the project.  Often this is due to changes by the different parties involved, construction issues, or a misunderstanding of the standards.

This Seminar will focus on reviewing some of the finer points when applying some of the accessibility standards to typical elements and situations.  It will include a review of the conventions, definitions, scoping and technical requirements, and the basic building blocks for a finer understanding of the standards.  Examples will be discussed showing how to meet the conditions for more than one of these requirements when applied to a single element.  Specific requirements will be reviewed that are frequently missed or misunderstood.  Finally, quality assurance that can positively affect the construction documents and the construction process will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance of the Conventions and Definitions and how they affect your documents.
  • Review specific elements and conditions that are frequently misunderstood and are not compliant.
  • Identify items in the design and construction process that can affect the quality assurance of the project.
  • Learn how to apply multiple pertinent accessibility requirements to elements in a project.

This session is registered for 2.0 AIA HSW Learning Units.

Parking

A limited number of handicap accessible parking spaces are available in the gated parking area of Bayou Place.

Effective immediately, AIA Houston will no longer be validating parking at the Hobby Center Parking Garage.  AIA Member registration prices have been reduced to account for the appropriate parking rate in this facility to correspond with the length of each class.  When possible, we encourage you to take public transportation and/or travel on foot or via bicycle.  Architecture Center Houston is conveniently located within 1-2 blocks of the MetroRail Green Line and Purple Line stations and is immediately accessible on local bus routes (30 and 44).
