My eyes kept settling on bigger vistas all around — harmonic moments where trees, land, and sky merged and mirrored each other in placid water... such scenes remind us that clarity and balance can prevail.
- Molly Glenzter, Houston Chronicle, July 31, 2020
Join us for a tour of the Clay Family Eastern Glades, the first major project of Memorial Park’s 2015 Master Plan. The project reclaims and restores 100 acres of inaccessible and ecologically distressed parkland, transforming it into a native wetland with a 5-acre lake, a savanna, a pine-hardwood forest, open spaces, picnic areas, and miles of accessible trails.
Project highlights include:
• Hines Lake and wetlands providing stormwater detention and reuse for irrigation, and aquatic habitat
• Over 2.5 miles of new boardwalks and accessible walking trails, with opportunities to experience and learn about natural ecology systems
• Expanded community areas with a new food truck court, and event lawn with covered picnic pavilions, and a lakeside plaza
• Re-established pedestrian entry at one of the original entrances to the historic Camp Logan
• An installation of quotes from over 50 Houstonians, curated by Houston’s 2020 Youth Poet Laureate, Madison Petaway, describing what Memorial Park means to them
Tour participants include:
• Randy Odinet – VP, Capital Projects and Facilities, Memorial Park Conservancy
• Caitlin Ferrell – Communications Specialist, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects
• Andisheh Ghofrani Tabari – Designer, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects
