Unembellished Integrity: The Furniture and Paintings of John Zemanek, FAIA

Houston architect John Zemanek (1921-2016) is known for his unadorned architecture, rooted in his foundational upbringing on the family’s Texas farm and in his formative experiences in Asia as a young adult. However, considerably less known is the fact that he designed more than a dozen pieces of furniture for himself over the course of his professional practice, and that he was a painter as well since his youth. His life journey yielded an ethic and an aesthetic that manifested with potency not only in his architectural production, but also in the tables, desks, beds, and painted works that span from 1938 to 2008.
