Course Description
This course is intended for structural engineers and architects seeking a full system understanding of the unique design considerations associated with wood-frame school construction, as well as a demonstration of the benefits realized through the use of wood in school facilities. Architectural design and detailing topics relevant to school construction will be discussed, including durability, fire and life safety, and allowable school sizes, configurations and construction types. Structural design steps, considerations, and detailing best practices related to both gravity and lateral analysis of common school configurations such as classroom floor design and corridor wall framing will be covered, as will options for wood-frame tall walls and long-span roofs in open areas such as gyms. Following this discussion, a former school district Director of Construction and Planning will provide real-world examples of cost and schedule savings. High-energy performance and associated cost benefits will be reviewed in the context of wood’s thermal performance and use in optimal building envelope systems. Developed in response to the frequent need for budget reduction measures in school construction, this course will present designers with the information necessary to confidently utilize wood framing as a cost-saving measure in school projects.
