A Mixed-Use, Walkable Community for Tanglewood

03/20/2014 | Ziegler Cooper

Houston, compared to most major cities in the US and abroad, is sorely lacking in density. Urban infill efforts, such as the recently completed Gables Tanglewood, are making strides toward creating walkable urban village environments that contribute to a greater sustainable growth strategy.

Working with Atlanta-based Gables Residential, Ziegler Cooper designed Gables Tanglewood, an 8-story, 316-unit, concrete frame luxury apartment to acknowledge the soft pastel color palette of the surrounding Mediterranean heritage of the neighborhood. Conveniently located near the Galleria’s shopping, entertainment and business district, the project features 22,000 s.f. of retail to activate the street scene, where residents and visitors can enjoy the recently opened farm-to-table restaurant Dish Society. Located in a 3,100-square-foot space, Dish Society has a 90-seat dining room with 70 seats split between two patios. Woodhouse Day Spa plans to join the development along with future retailers, which are yet to be determined.

“High density mixed-use developments make it easier for people to access jobs, affordable housing, shopping, entertainment and convenient transportation. Moreover, mixed-use developments evolve into walkable communities, contribute to the public realm, conserve land and create more green space; all of which reduce our carbon footprint,” said R. Scott Ziegler, AIA, Senior Principal of the Urban Residential Studio.

Luxury one, two and three bedroom apartment homes feature 10’-12’ ceilings, quartz kitchen and bath counters, strand woven bamboo wood floors throughout the living and dining, 18” tile flooring in baths, stainless steel appliances including side-by-side refrigerators. Other custom finishes include iPod docking stations with blue-tooth capabilities and USB ports in desk and bedroom areas. Packed with resort style amenities, tenants can relax by the infinity edge pool and outdoor cabana, entertain in the demo kitchen/lounge, or watch a favorite movie in the private movie theater. Other community features include a central courtyard, fitness center, internet lounge and conference room. Gables Tanglewood is currently seeking NGBS Silver.
