As part of a long-term plan to increase geographic reach, FKP Architects is opening a third office in Columbus, Ohio. Senior planner and designer Joseph Kuspan joins the firm as a Sr. Vice President; Kuspan will work alongside Mitch Levitt, Director of Market Strategies and Principal at FKP, who has been cultivating new clients in the region. The FKP Columbus office will provide specialized project support to the FKP Houston and Dallas offices; Kuspan will support national FKP efforts in the pediatrics and higher education sectors.

Diane Osan, FKP’s Chairman and Chief Visionary Officer, commented, “Mitch Levitt laid the groundwork, and we’ve been actively searching for the right talent and opportunity to launch a true third office location. We clearly found both with Joe. Combining the creativity of a designer with the functionality of a planner, he has positioned himself at the intersection of both disciplines, and has the skills we need to grow a new office for FKP.”

Kuspan has designed projects in many sectors, though healthcare has always been an area of his focus and passion. The Center for Health Design awarded Kuspan their prestigious certification in evidence-based design (EDAC) based on his project experience and community involvement. Evidence-based design has been a focus for Kuspan particularly as it relates to the positive impact design holds for patients and caregivers. Kuspan was the project designer and medical planner for Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin, garnering the recognition of the first LEED Platinum hospital in Texas. Kuspan also has extensive experience designing children’s, pediatrics, and community hospitals as well as cancer treatment facilities.

In 2009, Kuspan was named one of the top 25 most influential people in healthcare design by Healthcare Design magazine. He has lectured for design and client audiences at the AIA National Convention and the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. His design skills have come in handy as a juror for several design competitions across the country. He has been invited to participate on juror’s panels for the AIA National Healthcare Design Awards, AIA Indiana, and AIA Boston. Kuspan is an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame.
