2020 AIA Houston Ben Brewer Young Architect - AJ Sustaita, AIA

Mirador Group has promoted Krystyn Haecker, AIA to Associate Principal. Haecker joined Mirador Group in 2013, during which time she has managed luxury multifamily projects from programming through construction, including Giorgetti Houston, The Sophie at Bayou Bend, Riva at the Park, Bell Heights and The Westmore. Haecker served as AIA Houston Women in Architecture Committee Chair in 2018 and currently serves as the Texas Society of Architects Vice President of Professional Development.

John Kirksey, Chairman and founder of Kirksey Architecture, awarded the 2020 Master Builder Award

The Associated General Contractors (AGC) Houston presented John Kirksey, Chairman and founder of Kirksey Architecture, with the 2020 Master Builder Award at the APEX Gala for his invaluable contributions to the industry and community at large. The AGC Houston's Awards for Project Excellence (APEX) recognizes firms in the industry for their excellence in construction. The APEX “A Starry Night” Gala was held on Saturday, May 22nd, at The Houstonian Hotel after being postponed multiple times due to COVID-19.

Houston school receives distinguished sustainability award. The Monarch School and Institute was awarded IFIL’s prestigious Petal Certification.

International Living Future Institute (IFLI) awarded The Monarch School and Institute Living Building v2.1 Petal Certification. The Monarch School and Institute was the first in the state of Texas to be certified under the Petal Certification and the first in Houston (5th in the state) to receive an IFLI certification. The school is extremely excited to be recognized for their sustainable design and living building journey, which began in March of 2012, with the receipt of this Petal Certification.

VLK Architects Celebrate the Dedication of Katy ISD’s McElwain Elementary School

VLK Architects and Katy Independent School District board members joined together to commemorate the new Peter McElwain Elementary School with a dedication ceremony. Chosen as the namesake due to his commitment and dedication to Katy ISD, Peter McElwain led a 30-year career serving as a Katy ISD District Architect. During the ceremony, he was presented with a portrait for the campus to proudly display as a reminder of the namesake and the legacy that will live on in this building for generations.

Northwood Apartments, a Multifamily Housing Community, to Replace Housing Lost During Hurricane Harvey

HOUSTON, TX (Tuesday, March 23, 2021) – The Harris County Housing Authority (HCHA), Harris County – Community Services Department (HCCSD), Harris County Precinct One Commissioner Rodney Ellis, the Texas General Land Office (GLO), and the development partner LDG Development (LDG) celebrate the groundbreaking of Northwood Apartments, a multifamily development located at 12620 Eastex Freeway to replace housing lost during Hurricane Harvey. The development is financed with Harris County’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds in conjunction with private financing from Citi Community Capital and AEGON USA Realty Advisors, LLC.

Architect Standard of Care Relative to Site Visits During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Architecture firms are undoubtedly facing many challenges and decisions as they deal with the impact of COVID-19. Most architecture firms are working remotely, either by their own choice or at the direction of local authorities. However, many construction projects are continuing. Architects and their firms that need to provide contract administration services or other contractual or legal obligations for site visits will need to balance competing interests and obligations.

On Aug. 22, 2019, Bautex Systems’ Chris Leonard, Paul Brown and Gretchen Kliafas with Emily Ledbetter, project manager from Masa Studio Architects, were joined by more than 50 architects, engineers, general contractors and community leaders for a tour of Gracewood’s new community center. The new, 15,000 sq. ft. community center is one of the most flood and wind resistant buildings currently under construction in Harris County.

Kirksey Architecture is now carbon neutral and makes first-ever carbon storage transaction on Texas Gulf Coast

With the purchase of carbon storage from 386 acres of marshlands along the Texas coast, Kirksey Architecture has met its goal of becoming a carbon-neutral company. The purchase represents the first transaction of the Texas Coastal Exchange (TCX), a non-profit seeking to establish a marketplace to buy and sell ecological services and to allow firms to offset their carbon footprint by supporting the conservation of local ecosystems.

"Out of Many, One People" by Design Collaborative and Hines Architecutre + Design was selected in an international design competition for Jamaica's new Houses of Parliament.

Over the last year, I have lead the design for a very important competition that was near and dear to my heart. As a Jamaican-American, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in a global competition to design the new Houses of Parliament in Kingston Jamaica. The competition was sponsored by the Jamaican urban Development Corporation on behalf of the Government of Jamaica.

Kirksey Architecture is proud to announce that Catherine Callaway, AIA, LEED AP has been named the 2019 AIA Houston Ben Brewer Young Architect. This is the fifth time a Kirksey employee has been the recipient of such a recognition–-previous winners include Kirksey President Wes Good (2001), Executive Vice President and Interior Architecture Team Leader Brian Malarkey (2004), Vice President and PreK-12 Team Leader Nicola Springer (2009), and Vice President and Sustainability Director Julie Hendricks (2012).

VLK Architects and Brazosport ISD Break Ground on the Replacement of Brannen Elementary

Lake Jackson, TX – On March 22nd, VLK Architects celebrated breaking ground on the replacement of Brazosport ISD’s Bess Brannen Elementary. Celebrating the school’s 50th anniversary, and located on the outer edge of the surrounding neighborhood along Highway 2004, the construction of the new elementary aims to greatly improve traffic at the intersection of ‘That Way’ and ‘Anchusa Street’ by providing extensive off-street stacking lanes at the main entrance drive, as well as a dedicated bus/van drop off area, and an additional drop off location at the rear of the school. This state-of-the-art facility is the fourth iteration of a prototype funded by the district’s 2014 bond and will serve over 750 students in grades pre-kindergarten through four.

VLK Architects Celebrates the Dedication of Katy ISD’s Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences Center

Katy, TX – The Gerald D. Young Agricultural Sciences facility has received an expansion for the benefit of Katy ISD’s FFA and Agricultural Sciences program and the whole community. With the tremendous growth of Katy ISD in mind, modern structures were created to allow for evolving student needs and to allow students and teachers to interact outside of the classroom from the school barns to the project center, the eco-pond, show pavilion, and covered rodeo arena.
