The AIAH Residential Committee kicks off 2016 with a lunch and learn tour of Bayou Bend led by Stephen Fox on Tue, Jan 26, 11:30-1:30, 1 HSW sponsored by Andersen Windows and BMC Building Materials; 1 HSW from AIA Houston.

Description by Stephen Fox:
The Bayou Bend Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, occupying the country house designed by Houston architects John F. Staub and Birdsall P. Briscoe for Ima Hogg and her brothers, Will and Mike, between 1926 and 1928, is recognized today as one of the most outstanding collections of American decorative arts in the United States.

The house represents the effort of Miss Hogg and John Staub to devise an architecture of regional resonance that would be a model for how others might build in Houston.

During the 1930s Miss Hogg worked with the Houston landscape architects Ruth London and Fleming & Sheppard to shape gardens that would serve as examples for other Houstonians to follow. Miss Hogg was instrumental in inventing a new ritual—the River Oaks Garden Club's annual springtime Azalea Trail—so that Houstonians could have opportunity to visit her garden and other designed landscapes in River Oaks.

This year, Bayou Bend celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of its transformation from Miss Hogg’s residence into a museum, where people can come to appreciate and study the art, decorative art, architecture, and landscape architecture of this remarkable Houston place.
