HEALTHCARE AT THE EDGES:  URBAN GROWTH AND THE DECENTRALIZATION OF CARE

How can hospitals provide centers of wellness and healing, not only for individuals, but for the community itself? A dynamic field with major economic, social, and built environment implications, health care is experiencing tremendous change in response to shifts in policy, an aging population, and the introduction of new technologies and delivery systems, that will reframe health care and related facilities in the decades ahead. This presentation considers the potential for the integration of health care, mixed-use development, civic buildings and public spaces to produce attractive, sustainable, and better performing health care facilities that effectively serve patients and families, medical staff and employees, and neighbors alike.
