Taking BIM from the Office to the Field: A Contractor's Approach

Onsite construction processes are rapidly changing. Contractors are increasingly transitioning to paperless jobsites and full Building Information Modeling (BIM) of structures prior to the start of construction. They're also providing owners with preconstruction services, which encourages collaboration between the design and construction team. This collaboration often occurs around the BIM model. All team members benefit through better coordinated documents, real time value engineering resources, better understanding of the design intent, and a smoother transition from design to construction. Once construction begins, the power of the BIM model is realized through the development of shop drawings, daily work plans, and virtual mock-ups. Bullis will focus on how contractors are using specialized, very technically-constructed BIM models in their day-to-day construction processes, not at the exclusion of the contract documents, but in support of them.
