Kids and Architecture (Middle School)
Kids and Architecture is a 5 week in classroom program for middle school students. Practicing architects visit the classroom for an hour each week introducing basic architectural concepts and design skills. Students complete exercises such as bubble diagrams and model building with the architects as well as weekly homework assignments with the assistance of their teachers. After 4 weeks in the classroom, students work in teams to design a dream home or new school as a final project. In the 5th week, students travel to the architects’ ofce and present their final projects. The program is free and available to all Houston area middle schools.
Walking Tours (Ages 12 and up)
AIA Houston has 6 area neighborhood walking tours including 2 downtown tours, the Museum District, Montrose, Rice Univer- sity, and the Texas Medical Center. Trained docents lead students on foot while discussing architectural styles and eras, urban design, and local history. Tours are 2 hours long, but AIA can tailor time and content to meet reasonable requests. Walking tours are recommended for students aged 12 and up. The fee for walking tours is $10 per students. Teachers and chaperones attend at no charge.
Career Day Speakers
AIA Houston architects are available to come to your school to give a presentation about architecture and talk with your students about what architects do.
