Health Symposium Exhibition & Social (SES) annually provides an opportunity for education and networking to members of the architectural and healthcare communities. The event includes happy hour, a seminar, and a panel discussion focusing on a new era of growth and innovation in the healthcare industry.

Emergency preparedness and Resilience in Healthcare: Were we ready?

One of the most critical components of Healthcare is life safety and emergency preparedness. These factors are closely tied together and vital to resilience. They affect patients, staff and the community on a daily basis. Healthcare facilities have to operate 24 hours a day 365 days a year uninterrupted. Despite extensive planning and preparation most facilities are challenged during and after natural disasters.

Houston has had its major share of catastrophic weather events. The most recent being Hurricane Harvey. Harvey’s devastation received national attention and it was clear that it was not a rare occasion,  “The Houston area alone has seen no fewer than three such events in the past three years, according to local officials: Memorial Day floods in 2015 and 2016, followed by Hurricane Harvey's torrential rains this year.”-Washington Post. These 3 events were considered 500 year floods. In other words there is a .2 percent chance of occurrence in any particular year. The increase in extreme weather events is proving to be higher than statistically predicted. So it begs the question, was the city ready? With past storms such as Allison and Ike, were the responses in infrastructure improvements adequate to face Harvey? If so, is Houston ready for future extreme weather events?

The 2018 Health SES will explore and analyze the emergency preparedness of Houston’s Healthcare industry. Register to listen in on the panel discussion. The panel discussion will be composed of representatives from the major hospitals in the city. Special guest and Keynote Speaker Paul D. Biddinger, will also speak on the topic of emergency preparedness.
