“If you look at history, innovation doesn’t come just from giving people incentives; it comes from creating environments where their ideas can connect.” – Steven Johnson

As architects serving health care clients, expanding our thinking beyond individual buildings to embrace a broader definition of health care is essential in innovating.  Health care has made astonishing advances in recent years. Delivery of treatments is often inefficient, ineffective and consumer unfriendly.  As medical errors continue to mount, along with soaring health care costs, the system is in need of more innovative solutions in every aspect of health care in its delivery to consumers.

To truly impact not just space, but human lives through space, devices and human interaction, we need new tools and approaches to design.  In this presentation we will talk about going beyond boundaries of our disciplines to take chances while learning to fail fast and testing and stretching beyond what we historically know.  Creating partnerships with our clients and knowing the forces behind innovation is important.  Industry players, funding, public policy, technology, customers, and accountability can either help or hinder efforts in innovation.

“We need approaches to the solutions that aren’t just arithmetic and additive, but are in some sense logarithmic. This will require us to reach across historic boundaries and unlock the potential of collaboration across the usual disciplines.” Jeffrey S. Flier, MD – Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Harvard University
