Collegiate Mentorship and Scholarship Program 2020 Winners
The Latinos in Architecture Committee awarded three scholarships to Houston Community College students Mariana Cano Saldana, Desiree Gonzalez, and Francisco Ruiz this year. The students were paired with LiA committee members for a three-month long mentorship.
The Latinos in Architecture (LiA), collegiate mentorship and scholarship program through AIA Houston, is a professional network provided to students with the intent to bridge the gap between collegiate students and professionals in the Latino architecture community. The mentorship + scholarship program matches collegiate students pursuing a career path in architecture to a mentor that has established a career in architecture.
Students will meet once a month with a mentor during the fall and spring semester to discuss career advice and open dialogue about the architecture profession will be scheduled based on the student and mentor’s availability. These meetings are meant to be an open discussion about the architecture profession and to help guide the student’s own career path. These one-on-one relationships will be primarily driven by the student. The mentees (students) are encouraged to attend LiA events throughout the semester, followed by a thought-provoking discussion with their Mentor. Conversation starters can include career development, leadership, the future of the industry, etc.
Applications for the next round of mentorships opens early August 2021.
