MGMC gives motivated students, teachers, and parents an opportunity to interact with representatives of the architecture profession and share experiences with a diverse cross section of the Houston community. All Houston area high school students are eligible to participate regardless of grade level or age. Teachers and counselors are encouraged to promote this event as a serious scholarship competition with an emphasis on creative problem solving and graphic presentation.
Each January the MGMC Committee presents the students with a client and program for their designs and follows up with a mid-term review in March. The competition is juried and culminates with an awards ceremony and exhibition at Architecture Center Houston. Past clients and programs have included a Houston Dynamo Soccer Stadium, a downtown Houston Fire De- partment, and a Montrose neighborhood market. The competition is dedicated to the memory of Michael G. Meyers, president-elect of the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and managing partner of Kirksey-Meyers Architects, who passed away in 1988 at the age of 36.
Expected Outreach
Over 100 area students participate from all regional school districts; parents, teachers, and administrators of the participants; press release, exhibition and awards reception; a two week exhibition with over 500 visitors from the design build profession. This event is publicized widely throughout the architecture and construction industry.
