Alief Neighborhood Center and Park Tour

The Alief Neighborhood Center and Park, a new multipurpose facility located in west Houston, focuses on supporting the lives and health of the community. Reopened in 2023, the Center offers residents a recreation center, but also functions as a public library, a senior center, and a Women, Infant, and Child (WIC) program center.

Designed by Page, the Alief Neighborhood Center has been 30 years in the making and is a testament to community led design and the tireless efforts of community members like Barbara Quattro.

The Alief Neighborhood Center is the first City of Houston facility designed to offer public services from three of its departments: Health and Human Services, Parks and Recreation, and the library under one roof.

The 70,000-square-foot facility houses the WIC program office on the first floor and the relocated Hennington-Alief Regional Library on the second floor. Lifted above the floodplain in response to post-Hurricane Harvey concerns, the building sits atop an artificial hill. The center also features the “biggest front porch in West Texas,” a large, covered porch that serves as a flexible gathering space.

The 38-acre renovated park, designed by SWA Group, also models resilient landscape design in response to Hurricane Harvey with hardy native plantings and forested basins that naturally drain the site while simultaneously offering essential recreational facilities: a public pool, playground, skatepark, baseball diamond, soccer fields, walking paths, and tennis and basketball courts.
